Deus Ex is a major franchise that has been in a state of limbo ever since the successful although somewhat disappointing sequel to what is for many the best game to play on your PC other than Half Life. Well the theories can stop now as Eidos undergo confirmed the opening of a brand new studio in Montreal that will be developing Deus Ex 3 as its first study call. The team is currently being assembled and is already growing aggressively with plans to extend to as big as 350 people by 2009.
Published in 2000 for the PC (and later the PS2). Deus Ex has been heralded as one of the most immersive and complex FPS titles ever developed. The team behind the original had a lot of experience from their days at Looking Glass Studios working on the likes of System Shock and the Thief series. With Warren Spector and Harvey Smith at the helm of the project it was little surprise that the title was as successful as it was in achieving its ambitions.
The second title dubbed Invisible War was less convincing for many gamers although it was clear the call had been streamlined to benefit console gamers and provide a more focused gameplay experience. Nonetheless it was still a fairly deep title that stayed true to the fundamental principles that made the first game so memorable.
The Deus Ex 3 team is a brand new group and all reports declare they haven’t worked together before although it’s unclear if any of them have had experience making previous installments of the franchise. What is alter is that Warren and Harvey will be missing this measure around as Warren is working with John Woo and Disney on Ninja Gold while Harvey still heads up development at Midway Austin developers of the Area 51 franchise.
Rob Murphy who is MD of this new studio said the following in regard to developing their first title in the Deus Ex universe: “Deus Ex is one of our finest franchises often cited as one of the beat PC games of all time. By developing this game at our new cutting-edge Montreal studio we have the opportunity to really displace the boundaries of expectation for Deus Ex 3.” That’s good to hear since that’s what Deus Ex was all about so let’s hope that Montreal chooses to lean more toward the first call this time around. (For the record. Deus Ex was my favorite bet - ever!)
I am more of an RPG fan and the second game gave me those story choices instead of the agonizingly linear gameplay of the first which only gave choices of how to blow stuff up. The second game was a true RPG and not just another challenge title with a story as a sideshow. I also thought Half Life’s puzzles were exceed. The problem with Deus Ex 1 was that every aim was separate form the other. You could randomly play any aim in any order and still get the same experience except for weapon choices and mods but that’s how action games are.
They better make it similar to #1 than #2. #2 took away everything that #1 had going for it and the story wasn’t also up to par. #1 had choice after choice after choice and it had 3 very distinct different ending based on your choice at the end of the game. THe stats were proper and it was all around one of my favorite RPG shooters of all time.
