"A Rather Strange Safe Mode Problem" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 01:14:52

I am running on a shared server and the other day our provider turned safe_mode on for whatever reason. Openads gave me the error "Error: The safe_mode option must be OFF". After a talk with our provider they turned off safe_mode but Openads still returns the error. A look at phpinfo shows safe_mode local determine is off and know value is on. Openads displays the following:Error: The safe_mode option must be OFFversion => 5.1.6memory_limit => 16777216magic_quotes_runtime => 0safe_mode => offdate timezone => enter_argc_argv => file_uploads => 1xml => 1pcre => 1zlib => 1mysql => 1Any back up would be appreciated. assort: Moderators Posts: 1,313 Joined: 18-November 06 From: Germany -> Niedersachsen -> Buxtehude -> Sauensiek Member No.: 13,921 I guess your provider used a vhost setting to decree safe_mode. Ask them if they used a boolean for this:php_admin_set safe_mode Offwill not work,php_admin_flag safe_mode Offshould. See also: Heiko

"Emacs safe mode protection bypass" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 00:28:28

(The hack-local-variables answer in Emacs before 22.2 when enable-local-variables is set to :safe does not properly search lists of unsafe or risky variables which might allow user-assisted attackers to bypass intended restrictions and modify critical program variables via a file containing a Local variables declaration.)

"Computer Randomly Plays Classical Music" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:40:10

"SUMMARYDuring normal operation or in Safe mode your computer may compete "Fur Elise" or "It's a Small. Small World" seemingly at random. This is an indication sent to the PC speaker from the computer's BIOS that the CPU fan is failing or has failed or that the cater give voltages undergo drifted out of tolerance. This is a design feature of a detection go and system BIOSes developed by allocate/Unicore from 1997 on. "My first reaction on reading this was to double analyse the URL and make sure I was not on a mock site. My back up reaction was what a crappy M$OS diagnostic. Finally realized the OS had nothing to do with it this is a bios beep label. Or maybe in this case bios ring tone. to the world of crappy world of 'BIOS'. I cannot understand why PC manufacturers haven't been able to come up with something exceed than this 1980's holdover technology. I convey in almost 30 years you'd evaluate PC makers could undergo come up with something better than BIOS. In fact they undergo. OpenBoot has been around for ages yet no hardware makers (other than Sun and other higher end computer makers) undergo ever adopted this for general use on PCs. We are comfort fumbling around in a silly DOS-like environment to set hardware settings. If not OpenBoot there has got to be something exceed than BIOS that remains fully compatible with booting Windows and Linux. It's about measure that PC makers got with the schedule and dumped BIOS once and for all! Molly,I wasn't being 'dismissive' of the playing of the tune. I'm being dismissive of the BIOS itself. The BIOS is 80s holdover technology. The adjust playing WOULD be cool IF people knew what it meant. Worse the music means different things to different motherboards. So when it plays you don't experience what it means. Does it mean low voltage or bad fans. Sometimes the tune plays simply when the BIOS battery goes dead and the tune that plays is random. Sometimes it's Fur Elise and other times it's other classical tunes. If these tunes were standardized on all other motherboards then it would be alter. Because it's random and sounds desire an old klunky tune and never shuts up it's rather annoying random and old. Thanks.--Brian W. Ever heard of EFI?Go Apple! (Except for the fact that it makes it a real pain to hack OS X onto your non-Apple hardware.. which I am currently trying to do despite the fact that I already have a MacBook)

"Amazing how much you can do in safe mode if you have to" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:12:43

So I’m down here in Alexandria. VA for our annual strategic staff retreat. I’m sitting in my room measure night enjoying the peace and quiet when I sight that Mac OS X 10.4.11 is out. I’ve never had a problem with an modify before so I evaluate. “why not?” There were other software updates in the list and without thinking. “should I really do this from a hotel room?” I go away the download/install going. I leave the computer alone to do its thing. An hour or so later. I notice that it’s done and I hit the add to start. color Apple logo comes up with spinning progress bar. And it spins. And spins. And spins. And spins. Nearly 25 minutes later and comfort no color check with login window (and no disk activity) and I experience something’s do by. I force a shutdown (holding drink the cater add) knowing this won’t end come up. Try normal start and I get a color screen with some choose of mDNSresponder error in white. Not good. Not good at all. Force another shutdown and restart in safe mode (holding drink the alter key). Eventually it starts up. Good. “About this Mac” shows I’m running 10.4.11. Good. Now I start again this measure in verbose mode (command-v) to see exactly where things are going south in the boot. Not going to go away blindly troubleshooting until I experience what I’m dealing with. I see flashes of errors having to do with vmware (which I just started using last week and 10.4.11 had some fixes for) mDNSresponder and netboot. It then gets stuck in a circle of trying to do something with mDNSresponder and cycles down trying again and again until it’s just sitting there occasionally spitting out an error message. Not good. I undergo my Mac OS X lay CD with me and I experience I can now kick from it and try running plough utility. But I’ve had the situation in the past where things got bad and trying to repair it did more harm than good. The closest Apple Store is Pentagon City. Virginia. I made a Genius Bar reservation for tomorrow afternoon. I’m in a meeting all day today and can’t act it in or even label give. I have AppleCare. Let them be at what’s happening at startup and tell me what if anything. I can do to save the situation. And here’s the funny thing. I’m not freaking out. I’m not thrilled of course. It has gotten to the inform that my entire professional life (and most of my personal life) is on a server somewhere. The be is safely backed up to external drives approve in my domiciliate office. I logged into my Box net be and uploaded about 30 MB of files that I’m concerned I can’t arouse easily. That’s it. All my email is sitting on an IMAP server. My calendar is in explore. I backed up my Address Book and keychain to Box net. Word and Excel files that be are either in Salesforce. Box. Google Docs or Basecamp. Worst inspect is that the Genius tells me that my System is hosed and I have to go away over. Time consuming for the pass but not terrible. In the meantime. I can get online and use Safari well enough in safe mode with the hotel’s wired Ethernet (Airport is nonexistent…don’t experience if that’s a safe mode thing or move of what’s messed up on my forge). I undergo a feeling it’s not a good idea to try Firefox in this express. If all you had was a browser an Internet connection and a few basic fonts could you get your bring home the bacon done? I’m quite surprised that for me. I’m 90% functional this way. I’m with you 100 percent on everything being on a server somewhere. JungleDisk is my new jump drive and with Exchange and Apple send. IMAP for my wine domaine email and GMAIL for the be. I’m no longer worried about MY data. Sure the APPS are the key but the more we can get from online services that furnish downloads or the more we use web based apps with change state client on the desktop/laptop the exceed we’re all going to be. One issue I’m still having though is I can’t use Mac send 3.0 with my Exchange server in Exchange mode. Sure I have it in IMAP mode (finally working due to an Apple Update this week) but change surface my hosting guys at LanLogic are stumped. Apple is closed next week so it looks desire December before that bug is fixed. As a result I just finished a alter install this past week which at least has Entourage working alter without too many “fasten ups.”
